Is it enough to see the symbol of a wheelchair to know if a hotel, an agriturismo or a pension is capable of providing a disabled person with a comfortable stay? Not always, because requirements can differ widely and a mere symbol explains very little. So go to the Where to stay section and look in Advanced Search for the red disabled persons sign with the word “presenza dettagli”:
you will find all the accommodation of which the owners have filled in (September 2007) detailed questionnaire on the accessibility of their premises. All you need do is click on image and the word “info” to be found in the entry of each structure in order to open the questionnaire in the site http://www.turismosenzabarriere.it/, which is compiled by the proprietors themselves. This survey, carried out by the Apt in collaboration with the Association for Social Advancement "Cittadinanze", has gone further: on the basis of questionnaires and direct inspections, they have drawn up a list of facilities which offer tourists with motor disabilities the possibility to enjoy their stay in a totally self-sufficient way. These facilities meet the following criteria: doors must be wider than 75 cm, the rise of a shower kerb must be lower than 2.5 cm, a WC must be higher than 45 cm, any steps must not be higher than 1 cm, and a lifting platform must always be available (update February 2008).
